Seasons & Safety
Adapting care for the changing weather and festivals of India.
Summer (March - June)
Beat the Heat
- Hydration: Place multiple water bowls in shaded spots. Change daily.
- Timing: Walk pets only early morning or late night. Hot pavement burns paws!
- Cars: NEVER leave a pet in a parked car. It becomes an oven in minutes.
Heat Stroke Signs
- Excessive panting & drooling
- Bright red gums
- Collapse / Staggering
- Action: Wet with cool water, fan them, rush to vet.
Monsoon (July - Sept)
Humidity brings pests and infections. Stay dry, stay safe.
Prevention
- Tick/Flea Check: Parasites explode in number. Use spot-ons or sprays.
- Dry Bedding: Dampness leads to fungal skin issues.
- Paw Care: Dry paws thoroughly after walks to prevent pododermatitis.
Dangers
- Maggots: Any small wound can become maggot-infested quickly. Check strays daily.
- Leptospirosis: Spread through rat urine in stagnant water. Don't let pets drink from puddles.
- Tick Fever: Watch for sudden fever, lethargy, or nose/gum bleeding.
Winter (Nov - Feb)
Cold snaps kill puppies, kittens, and old animals.
Warmth
- Coats: Old sweaters or dog coats are life-savers for shorthaired strays.
- Shelter: Cardboard boxes lined with jute sacks or old blankets.
- Car Checks: Bang on your car hood before starting. Cats often sleep in engines for warmth.
Festival Safety
Diwali
Loud noises cause panic and heart attacks.
- Keep pets indoors with windows closed.
- Turn on TV/Music to mask noise.
- Ensure ID tags are on (escape risk).
- Create a safe hiding spot/den.
Holi
Colors are toxic chemicals.
- No Color on Animals: It burns skin and blinds eyes.
- Ingestion: Licking color causes poisoning.
- Wash: If colored, wash gently with mild dog shampoo. Do not use kerosene/turpentine.
