The 5-Step Process

1 Research & Decide

Don't impulse adopt. Decide on dog vs. cat, puppy vs. adult, and energy level. An older dog might be better for a busy professional than a hyperactive puppy.

2 Find a Source

Visit local shelters, NGOs, or check social media adoption appeals. Avoid "free to good home" ads from random breeders.

Search: Shelters Near Me

3 Meet & Greet

Meeting a pet

Spend time with the animal. If you have existing pets or kids, bring them along (with permission) to see if they get along.

4 House Check & Interview

Good shelters will interview you and may visit your home to ensure it's safe (e.g., netted balconies for cats). Do not be offended; this ensures the safety of the animal.

5 Paperwork & Home

Sign the adoption deed, pay any vaccination/sterilization fees, and take your new family member home!

Costs to Expect

Adoption Fees

Usually ₹0 - ₹5,000.

  • This is NOT a price for the animal.
  • It covers vaccinations, deworming, and sterilization.
  • It filters out people who can't afford vet care.

Setup Costs

Initial one-time expenses (approx):

  • Essentials: Bowls, Leash, Collar (₹1,000)
  • Comfort: Bedding, Crate (₹2,000)
  • Medical: Initial Vet Checkup (₹1,000)
  • Cat Specific: Litter Box + Media (₹1,500)

The Adoption Agreement

This is a legally binding contract between you and the shelter. It typically states:

  • You will provide proper food, shelter, and medical care.
  • You will sterilize the pet if not already done.
  • You will NEVER abandon the pet; if you can't keep them, you must return them to the shelter.
  • You allow the shelter to do follow-up checks.

Why so strict? Rescuers have seen animals sold to breeders, laboratories, or abandoned again. These rules promote safety.
