Birds in Indian cities face a harsh environment: scorching heat, lack of nesting spaces, and the deadly threat of glass-coated kite strings (manja). Small actions—like a bowl of water—can save countless lives.

Common Urban Species

Rock Pigeon

Found everywhere. Often suffer from "string foot" (toes entangled in thread) and calcium deficiency.

House Crow

Highly intelligent scavengers. They keep our cities clean but are prone to dehydration in summer.

House Sparrow

Disappearing from modern cities due to a lack of nesting holes in glass buildings. They need nest boxes.

Black Kite (Cheel)

Raptors that soar high on thermals. The #1 victim of manja cuts during kite festivals.

Bird drinking water

A simple clay bowl can save a life when temperatures soar.

The #1 Lifesaver: Water

Dehydration kills more birds in Indian summers than any other cause.

How to Place Water Bowls

  • Material: Use earthen (clay) bowls. They keep water cool naturally.
  • Depth: Shallow (2-3 inches). Deep buckets can be drowning hazards for small birds.
  • Location: Shade is best. Place on balconies, compound walls, or terraces.
  • Hygiene: Scrub and refill daily to prevent dengue mosquito breeding.

Responsible Feeding

Feeding birds is a common practice, but doing it wrong can cause bone disease (metabolic bone disease) in pigeons.

YES

  • Grains: Bajra (pearl millet), Jowar (sorghum), Wheat, Rice (raw).
  • Fruits: Papaya, apple, banana (for parrots/mynas).
  • Water: Always provide water with food.

NO

  • Sev/Gathiya: Too salty; causes kidney failure.
  • Bread/Roti: Zero nutrition; fills stomach but starves the bird.
  • Cooked Food: Oil and spices are toxic.

Rescuing an Injured Bird

If you find a bird that cannot fly, is bleeding, or behaving strangely:

  1. Calm it: Gently throw a light cloth over the bird. Darkness reduces stress instantly.
  2. Contain it: Place the bird (with the cloth loosely over it) in a cardboard box with air holes.
  3. Do NOT feed/water: Never force water down the beak. It can enter the lungs (aspiration) and kill the bird.
  4. Keep Warm: Shock kills birds. Keep the box in a warm, quiet corner.
  5. Call for Help: Avian anatomy is delicate. Contact a specialized bird NGO immediately.

The Manja Menace

Glass-coated kite string (Chinese Manja) is illegal but prevalent. It slices through wings and necks.
Action: If you see dangling manja on trees or wires, safely remove and dispose of it. Never leave it hanging.
