Found an Animal?
A decision-making guide to help you figure out what to do next.
Note: Avyarth Commons is a knowledge resource—we cannot provide emergency rescue or medical help. For immediate assistance, please contact your local police (100), a veterinarian, or an animal welfare NGO directly.
Critical Emergency?
If the animal is bleeding heavily, unconscious, having seizures, or struggling to breathe:
- Call Police: 100 (they can assist with accidents and emergencies)
- Call a Vet: Search for "emergency vet near me" or check your local listings
- Contact an NGO: Many animal welfare NGOs have ambulance services
Our directory may help you find contact details, but please call directly for emergencies.
1 Assess Safety First
A frightened or injured animal may bite or scratch in self-defense. Protect yourself to protect them.
Observe Body Language
- Dogs: Growling, baring teeth, rigid body? Do not approach. Call a professional handling team.
- Cats: Hissing, flattened ears, puffed tail? They are terrified. Move slowly.
Secure the Animal
- Dogs: Use a slip lead or makeshift leash (belt/rope).
- Cats/Puppies: Gently place a towel over them and scoop into a ventilated box or carrier.
- Birds: Cover with a cloth to calm them, then pick up gently.
2 Identify the Scenario
What kind of animal is it?
Lost Pet?
Looks well-fed, has a collar, or is a specific breed (Labrador, Persian, etc.)?
- Check for tags/collar.
- Take a clear photo centered on the face.
- Ask nearby shopkeepers/guards.
- Action: Take to a vet to scan for a microchip.
Injured Stray?
Visible wounds, limping, mange (skin infection), or too thin?
- Offer water (do not force).
- Do not offer food if surgery might be needed.
- Action: Transport to a vet or call an NGO ambulance.
Wildlife?
Birds, Snakes, Monkeys, or Squirrels?
- DO NOT HANDLE snakes or raptors (eagles/kites).
- Keep distance.
- Action: Call specialized wildlife rescues immediately.
3 Community Animals (Healthy Strays)
If you see a healthy dog or cat living on the street, it is likely a community animal. Relocation is illegal under Indian law.
How to Help:
- Sterilization (ABC): Check for a V-shaped ear notch. If missing, arrange for sterilization.
- Vaccination: Ensure they get an annual anti-rabies shot (7-in-1 is a bonus).
- Feed Responsibly: Designated spot, fixed time, clean up afterwards.
